A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
