Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public in the coming days.
